For the fourth year, Psychological Association of Greater Allegheny students organized a NAMIWalks team. This event kicks off a year of community-based club initiatives, such as the upcoming Middle School Mentor Program.
“Puerto Rico se levanta” is the phrase serving as inspiration as the island begins to rebuild, translating to “Puerto Rico rises.” Puerto Rican students at Greater Allegheny campus are spearheading a collection for Hurricane Maria victims in coordination with Brother’s Brother Foundation and the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Professor of Sociology Verónica Montecinos’s edited volume of “Women Presidents and Prime Ministers in Post-Transition Democracies” analyzes the cultural, institutional and policy dimensions of the ascent of women to executive power. The book includes several theoretical chapters and eight country studies in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Latin America.
As part of new campus initiatives to combat clothing and food insecurities in the Pittsburgh region, Greater Allegheny campus has opened Free Store 15132 to provide community members with necessities at no cost. The store will be managed by students through volunteer work, providing them with valuable real-world experiences.
Several classics of African cinema have been lost, discarded or forgotten. MaryEllen Higgins, associate professor of English at Penn State Greater Allegheny, attended the Africa in Motion Film Festival in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland, where she presented on the importance of restoring Africa’s cinema archives.
Students from six Penn State campuses, including Penn State Behrend, participated in public service projects in Erie on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They repaired bicycles, ran bingo games and sorted clothes at a community shelter.
Alandra Kahl, assistant teaching professor of engineering in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Penn State Greater Allegheny, recently published a new book titled “Management of Environmental Impacts.” In the book Kahl dives into environmental concerns and addresses ways in which society can safely preserve the environment, focusing on the future, climate change and global innovation.
Penn State announced $200,000 in new seed grant funding as part of the University's Invent Penn State Initiative. The four campuses receiving grants — Beaver, DuBois, Greater Allegheny and Hazleton — bring to 21 the number of Innovation Hubs across the Commonwealth.
