Mascot Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Alumni Chapter event constitute a University Event?
No. Alumni Chapter events are considered Non-University Events. A formal request must be submitted, the appearance must be approved by the Campus Lead, and applicable fees must be paid.
Can the Mascot attend a wedding, birthday party, or retirement party?
No. The Mascot may not attend personal or commercial events unless contractually required through an executed sponsorship agreement and approved by the Office of Strategic Communications in accordance with University Policy AD07. The Mascot may not attend religious or political events.
What must be included in the annual Mascot Appearance Report?
Campuses must document all University and Non-University appearances, including dates, event type, location, and any associated fees. A standardized reporting form is available for annual submission.
Can a campus waive fees for a Non-University Event?
No. A fee must be charged for all Non-University Events in accordance with University Policy FN27. Fees may not be waived at campus discretion.
Can the Mascot wear shoes other than the official pair?
The official shoes are black Nike trainers or turf shoes. If unavailable, blue, white, or grey Nike shoes may be worn. No other brands are permitted.
Is a Mini-THON at a local school considered a University Event?
No. A Mini-THON hosted by a local school is considered a Non-University Event and must follow the established approval and fee process.
Can a campus loan the Mascot suit to an Alumni Chapter or outside group?
No. The Mascot uniform may not be loaned. Outside groups must submit a formal appearance request.
Can unpaid volunteers serve as the Mascot?
No. The Mascot must be a paid Penn State employee or student. Nonexempt employees, including student employees, must be paid an hourly wage when wearing the uniform. Students may also serve as the Mascot through an approved scholarship.
Can a student serve as the Mascot through a scholarship?
Yes. Campuses may engage a student through a scholarship arrangement, as determined by the campus.
How should the Mascot uniform be cleaned?
The uniform should be washed on a cold cycle and dried on a low setting. The inside of the helmet should be wiped with an EPA-registered disinfectant after each appearance.
Can the Mascot appear at an event without a guide?
No. A University employee must always accompany the Mascot as a guide at every appearance.
Can the Mascot miss class to attend an appearance?
No. A student serving as the Mascot may not miss class or academic obligations for an appearance.
Can the Mascot accept gifts or promotional items?
The Mascot and guide may not accept gifts, special promotions, or items unless they are available to all participants at the event. See University Policy AD86 for additional guidance.
What happens if the costume is damaged at an event?
If damage occurs due to negligence or misconduct at a Non-University Event, the requesting organization is responsible for repair or replacement costs.
Can the Mascot speak during appearances?
No. The Mascot must remain silent and may not speak, sing, or make verbal noises.
What if weather conditions are unsafe?
The Mascot and guide may end an appearance if weather conditions pose a health or safety risk. The guide is responsible for monitoring for signs of heat-related illness.
Can photos from an appearance be used for commercial promotion?
Photos and videos may not be used for commercial or promotional purposes without written approval from the Office of Strategic Communications.
