Maintaining the quality of the Mascot and uniform is essential to upholding the University’s standards of integrity, image, and character.
The Campus Lead is responsible for ensuring the Mascot uniform:
- Is used only at approved events
- Is properly maintained and cleaned
- Meets University image standards (no holes, visible damage, or excessive wear)
For repair or replacement guidance, contact the Office of Strategic Communications.
How to Wear the Nittany Lion Suit
- Secure a private changing space.
- Arrange a private room in advance with event organizers (avoid public restrooms when possible).
- A mirror is recommended to check appearance and fit.
- Remove street clothing.
- The suit retains heat. Moisture-wicking clothing is recommended. Compression shorts are typical. A black long-sleeve shirt may be worn underneath if desired.
- Put on the body of the suit.
- Put on the scarf.
- The scarf covers the zipper and should be tucked at the neck, draping flat down the front to approximately hip height.
- Ensure the scarf lies flat and fully covers the zipper.
- Attach pins (optional).
- Only official University pins may be used. Place 2–4 pins on alternating sides of the scarf, starting at the top and extending no lower than the stripe above “Penn State.”
- Put on shoes and secure them.
- Official footwear is black Nike trainers or turf shoes. Blue, white, or grey may be acceptable, but no other brand logos are permitted.
- Put on sleeves.
- Black sleeves must be worn under the suit to prevent visible skin when arms are raised. Sleeves should extend just past the wrist and end above the elbow. Only Nike branding is permitted.
- Put on gloves.
- Gloves must overlap the sleeves.
- Put on the helmet.
- Fasten all snaps securely. Adjust the neck hood so it lies flat and is not curled. Ensure the ears are fluffed and not pressed flat against the helmet.
- Conduct a final uniform check.
- Get into character.
- The Mascot represents not only Penn State Greater Allegheny, but every Penn State campus and Penn Staters across the Commonwealth and around the world. Appearances should reflect professionalism, pride, and respect.
