Finding an appropriate internship is a research project likely to take several weeks to several months. Students should begin considering their internship plans during their 4th and 5th semesters. Our structured internship process exists to facilitate student success and ease the stress associated in securing the right internship opportunity.
Internship Prep Course
Starting in the 4th and 5th semesters, students may enroll in a one-credit (1cr.) internship prep course. This academic course prepares students for the application process, refines networking skills, and helps students succeed in interviews.
Display of Professionalism
Regardless of the internship's modality or location, students are expected to exhibit a high degree of professionalism throughout their work experience. Upon completing their internship or field instruction, students will deliver a formal, public presentation to members of Penn State Greater Allegheny.
Timeliness of Applications
Employers incorporate internships into their work plans with varying deadlines. Students need to be aware of these deadlines, as they often occur at least six months in advance. When researching opportunities, students should keep in mind that requirements and deadlines may differ for each employer.
Regular Research Effort:
Dedicate time to research internship opportunities. Internships in the same field or industry may vary from one employer to another. Explore all available options and examine the qualifications sought by employers to find the right opportunity for you.
Identifying Learning Objectives:
Students should collaborate with their internship faculty, instructor, or advisor to establish specific academic learning objectives, connecting their workplace experience to classroom instruction
