On Jan. 20 — Martin Luther King Jr. Day — 62 Penn State students spent their day off from classes to support the work of numerous nonprofit organizations in Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties.

More than 50 Penn State students from five campuses took their day off from classes to make it a "day on" for the annual MLK Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 21. The 2019 Penn State New Kensington-hosted event featured volunteerism at six organizations in the Alle-Kiski Valley. As part of new campus initiatives to combat clothing and food insecurities in the Pittsburgh region, Greater Allegheny campus has opened Free Store 15132 to provide community members with necessities at no cost. The store will be managed by students through volunteer work, providing them with valuable real-world experiences.
