In 1948, Penn State established the McKeesport Center to provide educational opportunities to veterans returning from World War II. Over the course of seventy-five years, thanks to the support and generosity of many, the campus has continued to offer a world-class Penn State education in the City of McKeesport. The McKeesport Center played a crucial role in serving the community and has evolved into what is now known as Penn State Greater Allegheny

The Digital Fluency Project at Penn State Greater Allegheny is an innovative initiative aimed at equipping students with essential digital skills to thrive in today's technology-driven world. Through the Digital Fluency Project, students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge software, applications, and online resources, empowering them to be confident and competent users of technology. The project fosters a dynamic learning environment, where students can explore and engage with digital tools to enhance their academic and professional pursuits.

We are honored to be recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2022 - 2025 for our Digital Fluency Project.  Each member of our campus community engages in this innovative and collaborate project.  

This forward-thinking project aligns with Penn State Greater Allegheny's commitment to providing a well-rounded education that prepares students for success in their academic and professional endeavors. With the Digital Fluency Project, our campus continues to lead the way in empowering students to be digitally fluent, digitally responsible, and well-equipped for the challenges of the digital age.

In the early 1990s, technology at Penn State Greater Allegheny, then Penn State McKeesport, was in its earlier stages compared to the advanced digital landscape we have today. The campus had limited computer resources, primarily consisting of a few computer labs with basic white box computers. These early computers were far from the sleek and powerful devices we have today, but they were instrumental in introducing students to the digital world and eventually becoming digitally fluent.

Despite the limited technological resources, the campus community recognized the potential of technology as a valuable learning tool. The early '90s marked the beginning of a transformative era, as Penn State Greater Allegheny started incorporating more technology into its academic curriculum, providing students with essential digital skills to prepare them for the ever-evolving digital landscape.

The technology landscape at Penn State Greater Allegheny has come a long way since then. Today, our campus is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge computers, high-speed internet access, and a wide range of digital resources and tools to support teaching, learning, and research. The Digital Fluency Project is a testament to our commitment to empowering students with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital age and prepare them for a successful future.

As one of the oldest buildings on campus, it bears witness to the academic growth and evolution of the institution over the years.

Today, the Crawford Building continues to play a vital role in the campus community, housing an information technology services help desk and supporting state-of-the-art classroom spaces and a one-button studio as part of our Digital Fluency Project. Its classic architecture and historical significance add character to the campus landscape, reminding students, faculty, and visitors of the university's rich heritage.

While the scientific equipment and experiments may have moved to more modern facilities, the Crawford Building's impact on the education and development of countless students remains a cherished part of Penn State Greater Allegheny's story. It stands as a testament to the institution's commitment to providing a well-rounded and innovative educational experience for all who walk through its doors.
