When reviewing the student's internship agreement, faculty and advisors should take into account the following aspects:
Alignment with NACE Competencies
Assess whether the agreement aligns with each of the eight NACE Competencies for career readiness and the overall learning objectives.
Connection with Degree Program
Identify evident connections between the agreement and the student's degree program. Explore how discipline-based knowledge, questions, theories, skills, or perspectives could inform the roles and responsibilities of the internship.
Insight into Academic Discipline
Recognize how the student's tasks during the internship can provide valuable insights into important concepts, theories, and problems within their academic discipline, thus contributing to achieving the set objectives.
Customization
Consider if the agreement can be customized to better match the student's interests, academic background, and experience, ensuring a more meaningful and tailored internship experience.
Disciplinary Concepts and Methods
Evaluate how concepts or theories grounding the student's discipline could be explored or tested during the field experience. Discuss the potential use of research methods or creative techniques. Explore how the field experience could test disciplinary concepts or theories and how research methods or creative techniques might be employed for this purpose.
Recording and Analysis of Observations
Reflect on how the student's observations, interactions, and experiences will be recorded and organized to shed light on relevant theories, concepts, and problems. Outline methods to gauge the student's progress toward achieving the objectives set for the internship
Approval and Evaluation of Internship Agreement
Approving or disapproving the internship agreement does not signify a definitive rejection. Instead, it serves as an opportunity to provide guidance and refine the agreement to align with the academic discipline and clear academic expectations.
To indicate the need for revision in the online form:
- Click the "Approve Agreement/Request Revisions" button in the online form.
- Select "Revisions are needed before your agreement can be approved." An email will notify the student of the remaining questions about the draft and its objectives.
- Provide specific suggestions for revising agreement sections, allowing students to revise and resubmit accordingly.
- Repeat this process until the agreement is well-grounded in the academic discipline and meets the academic expectations.
Final approval for the internship is granted by signing the approvals section of the online agreement. Once approved by the necessary parties, the course will appear in LionPath and CANVAS for the student and faculty, instructor, or advisor, respectively. Remember to check the deadlines to ensure timely submission of the agreement, aligning with the registrar's timeline to post the student's course in LionPath.
