What is The Digital Fluency Project?

Established in 2018, The Digital Fluency Project addresses Technical equity and digital citizenship.  All students, faculty and staff members receive iPad, the common tool that connects us to innovative teaching, learning and service strategies.  We unite Apple’s innovative technology with the expertise of our faculty and staff, and the curiosity of our student body.  Through the power of collaboration, our students acquire new knowledge, evaluate information and solve problems.  They understand how, when and where to ethically use digital tools and applications, signifying their belonging in a culture of responsible digital citizenry.

How Do We Innovate and Collaborate?

Innovation and collaboration is the expectation at Penn State Greater Allegheny.

The iPad expands the definition of “classroom” by allowing students and faculty to be in the same digital space, working to solve problems or share ideas, even when separated geographically.  The digital space expands student-faculty communication and dramatically shrinks the timeline between student work submissions and faculty written feedback.

How Do We Define Success?

Success in higher education occurs when lives are transformed, and conditions improve for the people and communities served.  By leveraging iPad and making digital spaces accessible to all, we have reduced paper usage and power consumption.  Faculty author, adopt and use free or low-cost digital course materials, reducing the amount of money students pay for textbooks.  Students access virtual advising and tutoring, ensuring they can engage with student success programs.

What Do We Envision for The Future?

Our faculty, staff and students have earned Apple Teacher certification, positioning us to establish a specific peer educator program in which current students guide and encourage our newest students to embrace educational technology.

Inspired by Apple Teacher, we will create a competency-based badging initiative, identifying digital fluency objectives that align with our degree outcomes and are informed by skills needed in industry and professional school programs.
