Science and Engineering Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (SECURE)

Explore. Experiment. Discover.

Curious about how the world works? Love solving problems and looking at big questions from different angles? SECURE gives you the opportunity to jump into real scientific research as an undergraduate — no prior lab experience required.

Who Can Participate

Anyone. SECURE is open to all majors, all class years, and all GPAs. If you’re motivated to learn, collaborate, and explore research, you’re welcome here.

What You’ll Do

As a SECURE participant, you’ll:

  • Work with peers to investigate interdisciplinary questions in biology, chemistry, and engineering
  • Learn experimental, analytical, and design techniques
  • Spend about three hours per week in the lab, plus weekly meetings to share progress, troubleshoot challenges, and discuss scientific literature
  • Apply your research skills to real-world problems

Why Join SECURE

Hands-on research experience can help you stand out. Through SECURE, you’ll:

  • Develop skills in hypothesis-driven research and laboratory techniques
  • Collaborate within interdisciplinary teams
  • Build confidence presenting your findings and communicating science clearly
  • Explore funding opportunities through Schreyer Honors College, Multi-Campus Research Experience for Undergraduates (MC-REU), and the Student Engagement Network
  • Strengthen your résumé for graduate school, medical school, or industry careers

Who You’ll Work With

You’ll collaborate with Penn State faculty, fellow students, and industry partners on projects that connect science and engineering to real-world challenges. SECURE provides a supportive, hands-on environment where you can contribute to meaningful research from day one.
