Growing Older: A Community-Engaged Common Intellectual Experience at Penn State Greater Allegheny

This year, our All-Campus Day theme is "Growing Older." In collaboration with the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging, we will explore the multifaceted aspects of aging in our society, focusing on what it means to grow older, the experiences of older adults in Pittsburgh, and how we can enhance their lives through community engagement and collaborative efforts.

Why Growing Older?
This initiative reflects our commitment to addressing the unique needs of our community. In 2020, over 20% of individuals in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area were 65 years or older, ranking among the highest in the country. This population is expected to increase 21% by 2050. With the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area having a significant older adult population, our focus is on creating impactful solutions and fostering a deeper understanding of aging.

Highlights of All-Campus Day 2024:

  • Curricular Integration: Engage with educational activities that delve into the psychological, social, and biological dimensions of aging.
  • Co-Curricular Engagement: Participate in projects that promote intergenerational connections and community involvement.
  • Community Partnerships: Discover our collaboration with the Allegheny County Area Agency on Aging and explore how local organizations and senior centers are working to support older adults.

This year’s event is designed to inspire thoughtful discussion and practical solutions. Join us as we examine the challenges and opportunities related to aging and contribute to meaningful community impact.
