Personal Care Home Administrator (PCHA) Training

Enroll Now for our Spring 2021 Classes (3/29 -4/9)

(Monday - Friday | 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) 

Penn State delivers continuing education for health care professionals; who are preparing to become personal care home administrators and direct-care personnel. These individuals must meet continuing education requirements.

This program addresses issues surrounding personal care homes while learning how to provide safe, humane, comfortable, and supportive residential settings for individuals who require assistance. 

Penn State is an approved provider through the Department of Public Welfare under the Personal Care Homes Licensing Regulations as of April 23, 2005, published in 55 Pa. Code Chapter 2600 (35 Pa.B.2499).

Department of Public Welfare Orientation Information

All program participants who wish to practice must attend the Department of Public Welfare (DPW) orientation.

This orientation is a free 6-hour seminar that must be attended before, during, or after the 100-hour training and exam; and must be completed before you begin acting in the capacity of a Personal Care Home Administrator.

Courses and Tuition

The Personal Home Care Administrator Training consists of 19 courses that vary in length from 2 to 9 hours. Tuition includes all course materials and the exam.

Individuals who have a valid certification in Adult CPR are exempt from the required training hours to complete Adult CPR training.  Individuals who have a valid certification in First Aid are exempt from the required training hours to complete First Aid training. If an individual completes training receives the certification in less than the minimum number of required training hours they are exempt from the remaining amount of hours to complete this section of the training requirements.  An individual wishing to use their certification in place of taking this course will need to show the valid certification(s) to Penn State staff, and a copy will be kept on file. CPR and First Aid training cards are due the first night of class. Please note that online training is not acceptable; your courses in these two areas must be live.

Qualifications necessary to attend this program
(Must obtain one qualification)

  • Associate degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university
  • License as a registered nurse from the Pennsylvania Department of State
  • License as a licensed practical nurse from the Pennsylvania Department of State & 1-year experience in a related field.
  • License as a nursing home administrator from the Pennsylvania Department of State.
  • For a home serving 8 or fewer residents, a general education development diploma or high school diploma and 2 years of direct care or administrative experience in the human services field.
