Dual Enrollment FAQ

What is Dual Enrollment? Dual Enrollment allows qualified high school students to take college courses at a reduced tuition rate and earn college credits while still in high school.

How do students enroll in Dual Enrollment? To enroll in Dual Enrollment at Penn State Greater Allegheny, interested students should first contact their high school guidance counselor or the Penn State Greater Allegheny Admissions Office at 412-675-9010. Students must complete the Nondegree High School Enrollment Form and the Nondegree High School Supplemental Form. These forms, along with the student's high school transcript, should be submitted through the high school counseling office to Penn State Greater Allegheny Admissions.

What are the benefits of enrolling in Dual Enrollment? The main benefit of Dual Enrollment is that students can earn college credits before graduating high school. This may accelerate their college degree, reduce overall tuition costs, and potentially eliminate the need for summer classes. Penn State credits are widely transferable to other institutions, enhancing flexibility in future academic pursuits.

What is the reduced tuition rate for Dual Enrollment? Participants in the Dual Enrollment program receive a grant-in-aid equivalent to 50% of the current tuition cost. Students are responsible for purchasing their own books, costs of which vary by course. Dual Enrollment students do not qualify for financial aid or loans.

When can students register for classes? Students can register for Dual Enrollment courses up to two weeks before the start of a semester, pending availability. It's recommended that students interested in fall semester courses enroll by May 31, spring semester courses by November 30, and summer semester courses by April 30.

How many classes can a high school student take? As per Penn State University Faculty Senate policy, high school seniors may enroll in up to eight credits per semester starting from the summer before their senior year, with a maximum of 24 credits. High school juniors may enroll in one 3- or 4-credit course per fall and spring semester of their junior year. Participation ends upon high school graduation.

How does a high school student qualify for Dual Enrollment? High school seniors must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Exceptions may be considered for exceptional students who do not meet the GPA requirement. Students must meet all other eligibility criteria as outlined in the Dual Enrollment policy.
