The keys to a smooth graduation

If you are planning to graduate from Penn State in Spring, Summer, or Fall, it will be necessary to take the following steps:

Declare your intent to Graduate

It is your responsibility to notify the University of your intent to graduate. You must declare your intent to graduate by using the "Graduating This Semester" application (updated link available in August). The Intent to Graduate Activation Periods for each semester are listed on the Academic Calendars for each semester.

If you miss the activation deadline for your intended semester of graduation, you must contact the Registrar's Office in Frable 114.

Meet with your Adviser

Request a current degree audit and review it with your academic adviser to ensure that all requirements have been met. If you are missing course, credit, or grade requirements, you will NOT be able to graduate.

Check your Name & Address

You will be receiving important graduation information in the mail, so it is important that your address is up-to-date.  Make sure your LOCAL address is correct.

Verify that your name and address are listed correctly in LionPATH.  This information can be found under the "Personal Information" section within your Student Center.  If there is an error with how your name appears, please see the Campus Registrar's office to have it corrected.

Transfer your Credits

You should avoid taking classes at another institution during your intended semester of graduation. If you do, you MUST ensure that Penn State receives the grades on time. Transfer credits should be sent to:

If you plan to attend a commencement ceremony

Note that Greater Allegheny does NOT have a summer Commencement ceremony, but if you plan to attend the Commencement ceremony at Greater Allegheny in the fall, it will be necessary to take the following steps:

Check your Mail

If you have declared your intent to graduate, you will receive important graduation information in the mail about 4-6 weeks before graduation. This information will include:

  • The date and time of the commencement ceremony
  • The deadline to RSVP to the Academic Affairs Office
  • How and when to purchase your cap and gown from the bookstore.
(In observance of tradition, all commencement participants will wear full academic regalia, consisting of a traditional gown and mortarboard with tassel.)
  • Announcement and RSVP cards to return for those attending.

You will receive a letter with contact information and the deadline to RSVP to Academic Affairs regarding your invitation to attend commencement.  Please send a response even if you are NOT planning to attend.

Pick up your cap and gown at the campus bookstore

It is important that you pick up your cap and gown as directed in the instructions you receive in the mail.  The bookstore will be open on graduation day.

Arrive one-half hour before Commencement

To ensure an organized procession and seating, you must arrive at the Wunderley Gym, Room 201, one-half hour before the commencement ceremony.
