Psi Chi - International Honor Society in Psychology

Psi Chi, founded in 1929, stands as a beacon for academic excellence in psychology, aiming to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship, while advancing the science of psychology. Open to both graduate and undergraduate men and women who are deeply engaged in the study of psychology, Psi Chi is committed to nurturing the brightest minds in the field.

What is Psi Chi?

As a member of the Association of College Honor Societies, Psi Chi is proudly affiliated with esteemed organizations such as the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Psychological Science (APS). Our sister honor society, Psi Beta, serves as the national honor society in psychology for community and junior colleges.

Psi Chi operates as a federation of chapters, spanning 1,000 senior colleges and universities across the USA, with our National Office headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Guided by a National Council composed of esteemed psychologists elected by our chapters, Psi Chi sets policies and oversees the organization's affairs.

Our Goals

Psi Chi serves two primary goals:

  1. Academic Recognition: By virtue of membership, Psi Chi provides academic recognition to individuals, acknowledging their dedication and achievement in psychology.
  2. Nurturing Talent: Our local chapters play a vital role in fostering the creative development of our members. Through various programs and initiatives, chapters create a supportive environment that encourages professional growth, practical experience, and fellowship.

Membership Benefits

Membership in Psi Chi offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Access to national and regional conventions held annually in conjunction with psychological associations.
  • Opportunities to participate in research award competitions.
  • Recognition through certificate programs.
  • Subscription to our quarterly magazine, Eye on Psi Chi, which unites members, informs them, and celebrates their contributions.
  • Publication opportunities in the Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research, fostering scholarly efforts and introducing students to the publishing and review process.

Becoming a Member

Membership in Psi Chi is open to students and faculty members with a strong commitment to psychology. Undergraduate eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of 3 semesters or 5 quarters of college coursework.
  • Completion of 9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours of psychology courses.
  • Ranking in the top 35% of their class in general scholarship.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) in psychology classes and cumulative grades.

Candidates are elected to membership by their institution's chapter in accordance with the national Psi Chi Constitution. Chapters may establish higher academic standards for eligibility but may not require service standards. Psi Chi embraces diversity and welcomes qualified candidates regardless of age, sex, sexual orientation, race, handicap or disability, color, religion, or national and ethnic origin.
