Internship advisers and Instructors play a vital role in guiding and approving student internships at Penn State Greater Allegheny. This process helps ensure academic integrity, learning value, and a strong connection between coursework and professional experiences.
Pre-Approval Checklist
Before approving an internship agreement, ensure the student:
Has completed at least 60 credits
Maintains a minimum 2.0 GPA
Has successfully completed the Internship Prep Course (typically in their 4th or 5th semester)
Your Role in the Process
Advise and review student internship plans and applications
Help define learning objectives based on NACE Competencies and disciplinary goals
Ensure alignment with the student’s academic program
Clarify expectations for supervision and evaluation
Review and request revisions via the online form
Sign off on the agreement once all criteria are met
Reviewing Internship Agreements: What to Consider
NACE Competencies: Are the learning goals tied to one or more career readiness skills?
Academic Connection: Do the duties relate to the student’s discipline, theory, or coursework?
Customization: Can the agreement be personalized to enhance relevance or engagement?
Documentation and Reflection: How will the student reflect, document, and connect internship work to academic concepts?
Time Commitment and Credit Guidelines
Internships typically require 40 hours per credit
A 3-credit internship = 120 hours minimum, across at least 8 weeks
Credit is earned through meaningful work and completion of academic assignments
Approval & Revisions
Use the online form to approve or request changes
Select “Revisions are needed” if updates are required
Provide clear suggestions so students can revise and resubmit
Once approved, the internship course appears in LionPATH and Canvas
