Internship FAQ's

We know that internships can sometimes feel overwhelming—especially if you’re the first in your family to go to college, balancing different needs, or figuring out how to start. Here are answers to some common questions from Penn State Greater Allegheny students.

When should I start looking for an internship?

It’s a good idea to start planning and searching during your 4th or 5th semester. Starting early gives you time to find the right fit and meet deadlines.

What if I don’t have any experience yet?

That’s okay! Internships are meant to help you gain experience. Focus on your skills, interests, and willingness to learn when applying.

Are internships paid? What if I can’t afford to take an unpaid internship?

Some internships are paid and others are not. If you need financial support, talk with the internship coordinator to find information about potential scholarships, stipends, or alternative options.

What if I’m nervous about interviews or networking?

That’s totally normal! Take our Internship Prep Course for help with resumes, interviews, and building confidence.

Can I get academic credit for my internship?

Yes! You earn credit by working with your advisor to set learning goals and completing required paperwork.

What if I don’t find an internship by the time I want to start?

Don’t worry. Contact your internship coordinator or advisor—they can help you explore options or resources.

How do I know if an internship is a good fit for me?

Look for internships that match your interests, goals, and needs. Talk with your advisors and attend campus events to learn more.

Who can I contact for help during my internship?

Your internship coordinator and faculty or staff advisor are here to support you every step of the way.

What is an Internship Legal Learning Agreement?

The Internship Legal Learning Agreement is a form that sets clear expectations between you, your employer, and Penn State Greater Allegheny. It outlines your internship duties, learning goals, and workplace responsibilities. This agreement protects your rights and ensures everyone is on the same page for a successful experience.

What is the Career Closet?

The Career Closet is a free resource where current Penn State Greater Allegheny students can get professional clothing for interviews, internships, and career events. It helps you look your best and feel confident as you take important steps toward your future.

What is the Internship Showcase?

The Internship Showcase is an event held at the end of each semester where students present their internship experiences to the Penn State Greater Allegheny community. It’s a chance to share what you learned, celebrate your achievements, and network with peers, faculty, and employers.
