Adult Learners or Non-Traditional Students

At Penn State Greater Allegheny, we understand that education is a lifelong journey, especially in today's rapidly evolving job market. Whether you're a veteran, a parent returning to school, or balancing multiple responsibilities, we provide the quality education and support you need to succeed.

Are You an Adult Learner?

Penn State defines adult learners as individuals who:

  • Are 24 years of age or older
  • Are veterans or actively serving members of the armed services
  • Are returning to school after four or more years of employment, homemaking, or other activities
  • Assume multiple adult roles, such as parent, spouse/partner, or employee

If you've attempted 18 or more credits at an accredited institution, you may also qualify as a transfer student.

What to Expect

Adult learners bring valuable experience and motivation to the classroom, making them uniquely positioned for success. At Penn State Greater Allegheny, you can expect:

  • Personalized guidance and support throughout your academic journey
  • Consideration for special admissions accommodations, including standardized test score flexibility
  • Flexible scheduling options, including day, evening, and online classes
  • Interaction with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff
  • Transferable college credits and globally respected certificates or degrees

How to Apply

  1. Create a MyPennState Profile: Start by creating your MyPennState profile. Scheduling an admissions appointment with us qualifies you for a waived $65 application fee.
  2. Complete the Application: Fill out the application within your MyPennState profile. Be prepared with your high school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores to complete the Self-Reported Academic Record.
  3. Submit Supporting Materials: Review your MyPennState checklist for any additional required documents, such as official transcripts or test scores. Submit these to our Admissions office via mail or fax. Once all materials are received, your application will be considered complete.
  4. Acceptance and Enrollment: Upon receiving your offer of admission, pay the $230 registration fee. Students planning to live on campus should also pay the $100 housing fee and complete the online housing contract.
