MCKEESPORT, Pa. – The White Oak Rotary Club awarded six scholarships to Penn State Greater Allegheny students for the 2020-21 academic year. Students were selected following an application process in which they shared their education and career goals, and their plans to give back to their communities after graduation.
Scholarship recipients include Namy Makiese, information sciences and technology, Alisha Tarver, communications, Yury Bogatyrev, corporate innovation and entrepreneurship, Cheyenne Hennen, liberal arts, Ebony Slade, biobehavioral health, and Julie Mainarich, Division of Undergraduate Studies.
The White Oak Rotary Club is a strong supporter of the Greater Allegheny campus and its students. Earlier this year, the club made a generous donation to the campus Student Emergency Fund. They also encouraged the formation of a ROTARACT and Entrepreneurship Club to provide students the opportunity to participate in community service, develop business skills, and network with neighbors, local leaders and community problem solvers. Sabrina Yushinski, president of the ROTARACT and Entrepreneurship Club noted the importance of the club’s existence on campus.
“ROTARACT is a club that allows students to come together and help the community through the resources available at Penn State Greater Allegheny,” said Yushinski. “The club allows students to develop leadership skills by having a hands-on approach to assist others through on-campus and off-campus events.”
Bob Heyl, student aid coordinator at Greater Allegheny, reflected on the importance of strong community partners and scholarships. “External scholarships, such as the one offered by the White Oak Rotary, help students earn their college degrees and with less debt,” said Heyl. “Students underestimate the impact scholarships can have on the dollars they have available for their semester bill. Searching and applying for and receiving external scholarships could cut their total loan debt.”
